The Springs Air Central Scouts participated in a Field Day for the first time at the Ditsong Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum from August 14 to 16, returning home with the Spirit Trophy.

The event brought together 21 Scout troops from across Gauteng, with the Springs Air Central Scouts finishing eighth overall. The Springs’ troop Scouter Chad van Staden told the Springs Advertiser that he is proud of the local Scouts.

He shared that the Spirit Trophy was just one part of the first Field Day experience. He explained that before the weekend came weeks of preparation, practice and plenty of hard work.

“Our Scouts spent time practising pioneering skills and lashings, learning how structures go together, getting their equipment ready and even making their own Field Day shirts,” said Van Staden.

He indicated that the Field Day was about putting everything they had learnt into practice. Working together, the team built their camp and took on their first Field Day alongside Scouts from across Gauteng.

“That is what Scouting is all about – learning by doing, working as a team, solving problems and gaining the confidence to have a go.

“Every knot, every pole and every structure brought a new challenge and another opportunity to learn,” said the Scouter.

Although it was the Scouts’ first Field Day, Van Staden highlighted that there was plenty to learn along the way. Even so, they jumped in, gave it their best, and, most importantly, had a lot of fun doing it.
