The Springs Long-Distance Taxi Association has expressed frustration over a sewage blockage and water leak at the Springs Station in the Springs CBD.

Speaking to the Springs Advertiser, the association’s chairperson, Mhlonishwa Ntombela, said a sewer spillage was affecting commuters with a putrid smell.

He said the matter had been reported numerous times over more than three months, but nothing had been done.

“The commuters have told us that the smell is unbearable, and we say to them that we have reported the matter and are still waiting for the City of Ekurhuleni to come and fix it,” Ntombela said.

“We are a business that works with people, so if our ranks smell bad, it is hard for us.”

Ntombela indicated that municipal workers came to the rank to fix the blockage and promised to return the next day, but failed to do so.

He said the water had been leaking for three years, which had also been reported.

“I do not know what to do because the rank is a place for the people. If it is not looked after, people blame the association,” he added.

Florence Mngomezulu, a vendor who sells food at the rank, said she had to move her stall because customers complained.

She said the smell had affected her business because customers avoided her due to the spillage.

“I want the metro to come and fix this. Now that it will be hot, the smell will be intense and unbearable,” Mngomezulu said.

The City of Ekurhuleni told Ntombela the sewer had been fixed. Comment from the city is awaited.
