Warren de Beer (38) participated in the full contact event in the U/73kg category of the Amateur South African Kickboxing Championship held in Oudtshoorn recently.

This is the 4th year Warren participated in the Championships and currently and trains with the Springs Kickboxing Club.
In kick boxing, each opponent gains points by the contact each make with their opponent.
Each fighter needs to get a minimum of six kicks in each round to gain points.
In the round one, de Beer struggled to use his boxing skills against Dekker.
Dekker was quicker on his feet avoiding contact with de Beer.
During the round, de Beer managed to knock Dekker down with a hooking punch.
This did not deter Dekker as he remained quick and agile for De Beer, getting in punches when he could.
De Beer resorted to more kicking moves which were partially successful.
By the end of the round, de Beer lost the first round and was behind on points.
Going into the second round, de Beer came back from behind, starting to take control of the fight.
“I let Dekker come to me, instead of chasing him with punches”, says de Beer.
Gaining more confidence through his control in the fight, de Beer fought back hard, he continued taking the fight to Dekker with kicks, even though Dekker put on a brave fight with blocks and punches.
De Beer won the second round convincingly.
In the third round, the kickboxer’s were evenly matched, young Dekker giving it his all, not giving up and taking the fight to de Beer.
In the dying minutes of the fight, de Beer did not know where he stood in the third round with regard to points.
“I did not take it as I had already won, the fight was a close match, it could have gone either way, Dekker did well in standing his ground.”
The end of the fight, proved de Beer to be victorious, the hard fought victory earned him a gold medal at the championship.
“I felt proud winning for the club, the fight was challenging despite our age difference.”
Both de Beer and Dekker’s kick boxing fighting techniques were different, but de Beer’s persistence and kick boxing experience paid off.
This is de Beer’s 4th time making it for the South African national kickboxing championship.
