Road runners host relay

There were 44 walking teams and 38 running teams of five runners each participating in the event.

A cold and rainy morning could not deter the enthusiasm of the athletes who ran in the annual Garbie Relay Race on Sunday.

This race, hosted by the Springs Striders Athletic Club, was held at Springs Rugby Club at Olympia Park.

In what seemed more than a dress-up, this was a serious relay race where 44 walking teams and 38 running teams of five runners each ran or walked in a 5 kilometre circle, beginning and and finishing at the rugby club.

This year the relay had teams with names like the Zombies on the Move, Fearless Squad, Touch & Go, Nuns on the Run, 3 Ladies 2 Tramps, Hawaii, 2 Cowboys and a Cow (wife), Fatty’s and Moanies and the Nigel Witblitse.

The Nuns on the Run was the best dressed team of the day.

With a time of 14:03 minutes, Pule Tjaoana of the Kwatsaduza men’s team was the first runner to pass on the baton to his team members.
