Bakerton lands in second place in soccer tournament

Springs Multi Sports Arena in Bakerton hosted their first soccer tournament over the weekend.

Ten teams, from Cape Town, Middelburg, Bronkhorstspruit and Pretoria, participated.

Other teams such as Malboro Bakerton, Aberdeen, Special Forces, Bakerton Bible Church (BBC) and RSA XI also participated in the tournament which was played over the course of three days.

“It was a very competitive tournament in which the local teams did very well,” says Ahmed Chouglay, Chairman of the Multi Sports Arena.

“The tournament was well supported by the community and supporters from other clubs.”

The tournament was played on a ‘round robin basis’ and the top two teams from each group qualified for the semi-finals.

The teams that qualified were Bakerton, Cape Town, BBC and Middelburg.

Bakerton faced Cape Town in the first quarter final.

“It was played to a very high standard and Bakerton was outplayed by the Cape side 4 – 2,” says Ahmed.

The overall winners of the 2015 tournament were Cape Town with the runners-up being the BBC team.

Goalkeeper of the tournament was Afzal Sibda from Bakerton.

“We are planning to host over 35 soccer tournaments shortly and we are looking to make this a national tournament, plans are underway for preparation of the tournament,” Ahmed adds.

The Springs Multi Sports Arena is currently running leagues and is open for any team to enroll.
