Springs Girls’ High School host annual mountain bike race

On Saturday, Springs Girls’ High School members (SGHS) braved the cold weather for its annual mountain bike race in Nigel.

Event organiser Yolanda van Greunen says this year’s Springs Girls’ High School mountain bike race event was well attended by a large group of cyclists who participated in the 50km, 30km and 15km with a number social riders cycling alongside the participants.

Race organiser Marian Labuschagne explains that the 15km is intended for beginners and children.

“It’s a fun race and also a flat route that will take you approximately an hour,” says Labuschagne.

“The 30km is for anyone who trains fairly regularly and takes mountain biking as a hobby.”

“The 60km is for people who take mountain biking very seriously. It’s very tough.”

Labuschagne says the money raised will go towards the girls who cannot afford school fees.

“Every year our subsidies grow because of the number of retrenchments that parents face, so we are aiming to sponsor a lot of girls,” says Labuschagne.

“The more money we make the more girls we can sponsor.”

“I’d like to thank all the teachers, sponsors, participants and our girls because without them this event wouldn’t have been successful. Hopefully next year won’t be as cold as this year,” says Labuschagne.

Lincoln Phakisi, a local businessman, was the main sponsor of the Springs Girls’ High School MTB cycle event that was held on Saturday.

“We’d also like to thank Lincoln Phakisi, a local businessman, who has been the main sponsor for our mountain bike race,” says van Greunen.
