Penalty shoot-out win for SOB u-9 soccer team
Local junior team holds Springs flag high at season championships.
Springs Old Boys’ (Sob) u-9 soccer team are The Cup 2017 as well as Easterns League 2017 champions.
They played against the Bedfordview Sporting team in Benoni in The Cup game on Saturday.
The Cup is a separate soccer competition which works on a knockout basis.
The u-9 team memebers have proven themselves throughout the season by staying on top of their game.
Coach Nino Lopes says they beat their opponents on penalties after a nail-biting game.
After scoring first Old Boys lead 1-0 for the entire game, but with 30 seconds to go, Sporting equalised the score.
“After a stalemate in extra time it all went down to penalties,” says Lopes.
After Sporting missed their third penalty it was down to the Sob captain Ceasario Lopes to slot in the winning penalty for Springs to win.
Ceasario scored a beautiful goal in the top left corner of the net to win the game for his team with 4-3 goals.
Other goal scorers were Landre Potgieter, Teboho Khanye, and Katlego Mokoena.
Coach Nino says it is such an awesome achievement for these youngsters to win the Easterns League and The Cup 2017.
“It has been a pleasure to watch these boys grow and achieve what they set out to do – I am a very proud coach,” says Nino.
