25 Comrades and counting…

“I am very grateful."

Striders Athletic Club runner Karin Smith (63) completed her 25th Comrades Marathon on August 28.
“I am very grateful. I ran my first Comrades in 1989, completed it but not within the cut-off time. I only received my first medal in 1991.
“The Comrades has taught me resilience and perseverance,” she explained.
The psychologist said she discovered her passion for running when she was in her 20s.

“My husband David and I started doing road races. I loved it! My passion for running lies in the fact that I can make choices about my body.
“Being healthy and feeling good is important to me. Endorphins are the happy hormones that make you feel good! I also love the social side of running because runners become good friends and help each other,” she added.
Smith’s whole family is athletic. She ran the marathon with her husband, eldest son and daughter.
