The Rio Grappling Club New Era celebrated a strong showing at the Subkings Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Competition held at Lakeside Mall on August 30, with nine club members taking part and five returning with medals.

According to coach Jannie Scheepers, the club secured one gold, three silver and one bronze medal during the competition.

Graysen Rees claimed the club’s gold medal, while Joshua Cloete, Ethan Earle Reynders and Tyler Smrz each secured silver medals.

René Cronje added a bronze to the club’s medal tally.

Scheepers also praised Skyler Smrz, Alistair du Preez, Ethan Nieuwoudt and Zadian van der Berg for their performances and commitment throughout their preparations for the competition.

He shared with the Springs Advertiser that for many members, the event marked their first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition, making their participation particularly significant.

Scheepers said the athletes had shown courage by stepping outside their comfort zones and testing themselves in a competitive environment.

“Regardless of the medals won, every competitor is a winner in our eyes,” he said.

He praised the team for demonstrating grit, determination, courage and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

He said that the coaches were proud of all nine competitors and looked forward to seeing them continue developing both on and off the mats.

“Your journey has only just begun, and we look forward to watching you grow both on and off the mats,” Scheepers said.
