Not a brilliant novel

The Shining Girls review by Natasha Kotze.

The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes sounded like an intriguing read – but it fell flat after only a few pages.

It tells the story of a serial killer who just happens to stumble across a house in Chicago in which time travelling is possible.

He travels through time, finds young girls and then kills them some time in the future when they are older.

He luck runs out with Kirby Mazrachi who survives his attack.

Scarred, but full of potential, she becomes a journalist who realises that throughout time, there have been several murders following the same modus operandi as her attack.

She goes hunting for the man who scarred her and killed several more.

This sounded so promising, but there was too much of the sci-fi aspects of this book that wasn’t explained – and as a sci-fi geek, I found this to be a big hole in the plot.

Kirby’s character was really annoying and I never felt like I knew her, which annoyed me even more.

The other characters were all flat and disappointing too.

This is one of the worst sci-fi crime thrillers I’ve ever read.
