Killer Joe – indeed

DVD: Killer Joe Starring: Matthew McConaughy and Emile Hirsh Directed by: William Friedkin Reviewed by: Anna Robertson Review made possible by: Nu Metro

The name of this movie says it all as it is definitely not rated 18SLN for nothing.

In the beginning of the DVD, where the desperate 22 year-old drug dealer goes to the trailer-park to see his father about a plan on how to murder his mother, the viewer is faced with a disgusting scene. This is enough to put any non-swearer or Christian off of DVDs for life.

Chris (Hirsch) needs to come up with $6 000 quickly, or he will be killed as his mother stole a stash of drugs from him and he desperately needs the money.

His mother’s life insurance policy can make them rich but then Chris and Ansel, Chris’ father, can’t pay the up-front fee and Detective Killer Joe, takes Chris’ sister, Dottie, as a sexual collateral until the money is collected.

They soon find out that they have been double-crossed by their mother’s boyfriend who is the beneficiary of the policy.

The innocent seduction between Joe and Dottie, is enough to make any McConaughy fan sick.

The movie is violent, darkly comic, full of strong sex performances, too many swear words, but Killer Joe proves William Friedkin hasn’t lost his touch, even if the plot may be too lurid for some.
