On the big screen: The Railway man

The Railway man

Starring: Colin Firth, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jeremy Irvine, Nicole Kidman and Stellan Skarsgard.

Directed by: Jonathan Teplitzy.

Based on the best selling memoir by Eric Lomax, this drama stars Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman as Eric and Patti, a couple who meet by chance, go on a whirlwind romance and get married soon afterwards. Once betrothed Patti soon discovers that Eric carries barely concealed and terrifying secrets from a previous life that he cannot leave behind.

In WWII Eric was captured by the Japanese and forced to work on the construction of the Thailand-Burma Railway, the so-called Death Railway. When a secret radio he built was discovered, he was brutally tortured by a Japanese officer.

Now, decades later and with Patti’s help, Eric discovers the Japanese interpreter who tormented him is still alive and sets out to confront him in an effort to put closure on his haunted past.
