MMC and EMPD Task Team confiscate truck full of illicit cigarettes

Around 2pm, following crime-intelligence information, a truck travelling from Zimbabwe was found smuggling cigarettes worth more than R1-million.

EMPD Task team members conducted Operation Kuthula, a crime-prevention intervention targeting lawlessness around the City on Sunday along the N17.

Illicit cigarettes worth more than R1-million were discovered by EMPD officers.

Around 2pm, following crime-intelligence information, a truck travelling from Zimbabwe was found smuggling cigarettes worth more than R1-million.

“The MMC for community safety, Clr Pheladi Frans Mmoko, reiterated that smuggling of illicit cigarettes was not tolerated as it cripples the country’s fiscal.
“The truck was then impounded, boxes of illicit cigarettes were seized and a male driver was apprehended,” said Thabiso Makgato, the EMPD spokesperson.
