Bowling fun and strategy on display at Springs club games

Nine teams took to the greens for a lively round of Ultimate Action Bowls, with players sharing their strategies and passion for the game.

Springs Bowling Club hosted its monthly Ultimate Action Bowls games on April 10, where players competed in two-bowl pairs over six ends, playing three games at a time.

The format awarded 60 points to any team that received a bye. Nine teams competed against one another.

“The two-bowl pairs is a game where one needs to concentrate because there are usually four bowls,” said the club’s chairperson, Tokkie Hattingh.

Rudolph Pretorius said he finds the format exciting and spoke about his strategy.

“The important thing is to get your bowls closest to the jack, which gets you four points, and if it stays there, it’s the eight points. That’s the secret,” he explained.

Sharon Pratt said the format has its pros and cons.

“If you come up against stronger opponents, then the 60 points are good if you have a bye. It can have its disadvantages if you get a weak team, and then you could’ve gotten more than 60,” she said.

Pratt praised Tony Tancrel for the work he does organising the games.

“He does a wonderful job, and we always have a great time,” she said.

Hattingh encouraged the community to take up bowling and said efforts are being made to attract younger players.

“The U15, U25 and U30 bowlers from Ekurhuleni recently played in Bloemfontein against clubs from across the country. We are happy to see more young people embrace the sport, and we hope there will be more,” she said.

Results:

  • First place: Andre Meyer and Tony Tancrel
  • Second place: Welma Reynolds and Estelle Garside
  • Third place: Izak Hattingh and Rudolph Pretorius.
