Bert Collins tournament delivers action as Gauteng clubs clash
Boxers from across Gauteng brought intensity to the ring at Bert Collins Boxing Club’s tournament with local fighters impressing and several earning spots at the upcoming Gauteng Championships.
Bert Collins Boxing Club hosted a tournament on April 11, attended by 16 clubs from across Gauteng.
Two boxers from Bert Collins were among the competitors.
Reflecting on their performance, Jeanette van Zyl said Tristan van Tonder fought well despite having a tough bout.
“I’m very impressed with what he’s been doing in the ring. His consistency is very good,” she said.
Keegan Britz lost 2-1 in his bout. A fight that Van Zyl’s beloved could have gone either way as both contestants brought their A-game.

She lauded her five boxers, Eugene Scholtz, Leandri Botha, coach Minnet Kritzinger, Geannè Dicks and Jacobus Jonker, who are going to the Gauteng Championship.
“I’m very proud of them. I know they’re gonna keep our name proud because they all worked hard for this. And we can only wish them luck.
“And Minnet has been selected for the second year to be in the academy team going to the championships,” she added.
An explosive fight between Alwande Janda from Vikings Boxing Academy and Sthembiso Mkhatshwa from JD Boxing Club ended in a KO victory for Janda.

“At first I was nervous, but I began to relax in the second round. In the third round, I focused on my footwork and upon delivering a clean shot, I managed to win,” Janda said proudly.
Vikings Boxing Club’s head coach, Hendrik du Plooy, said his five fighters who participated showed growth.
“They did pretty well today. All the hard work and training they put into this was displayed on the stage,” he said.
Mbulelo Sethunya from Beyond Limits Sporting Academy defeated Kabelo Mosisili from Super Tigers in a heated bout.

Sethunya said his game plan was to secure everything he’s been learning lately.
“My opponent came in using the fighting style I wanted to use, which caught me off guard. As the fight progressed, I challenged myself to adjust to a new approach which worked out for me,” he said.
Mosisili said it was his best fight despite the loss.
“I got tired in the last round, but I’m gonna keep working. My goal now is to prepare for my fight in Pretoria and to one day become a pro fighter,” he concluded.
