Springs SAPS warn of rise in break-ins across multiple areas

Police have intensified patrols and urged residents to improve security measures.

The Springs SAPS has acknowledged an increase in burglaries in some areas. According to local police spokesperson Sergeant Charity Zwane, the affected areas are CBD, Eastvale, Payneville, Selcourt, Selection Park, New Era and Geduld.

ProSafe Security Company reports there have been 13 break-ins in Springs since the beginning of this year.

Zwane said that both residential properties and business premises have been targeted. Preliminary analysis indicates that these crimes are largely opportunistic, with perpetrators taking advantage of unsecured properties and limited visibility.

She explained that the police have redirected operational resources to the identified hotspot areas to enhance visibility and rapid response. Additional measures include implementing more vehicle checkpoints and intensifying patrols.

“Community members are urged to continue reporting all incidents and suspicious behaviour to SAPS to assist in effective policing and crime prevention efforts.

Members of the community must secure doors and windows with burglar bars. Ensure garages and storerooms are always locked. Keep entrances, yards and parking areas well-lit.

“Install security systems like CCTV cameras covering entrances and blind spots. Report any suspicious persons or vehicles immediately. They must also join or form a neighbourhood watch and work closely with SAPS and the CPF,” she said.

Zwane advised that if the residents have experienced a break-in, they must contact the nearest police station and avoid moving items before police arrive, as this helps to preserve fingerprints and other evidence.

She highlighted the community’s crucial role in supporting the SAPS in preventing crime. Zwane has urged the strengthening of the local CPFs. She added that timely reporting helps SAPS identify patterns and hotspots.

“Protect vulnerable groups, like the elderly and people living alone. Provide information about known suspects and avoid spreading unverified information,” she concluded.
