SASSA gold card users urged to switch to Postbank Black cards before August 31

Postbank has urged all SASSA grant beneficiaries still using Gold Cards to replace them with Postbank Black Cards before August 31, warning that the old cards will stop working after the deadline.

Postbank has urged social grant beneficiaries still using South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) Gold Cards to replace them with the new Postbank Black Cards before the August 31 deadline.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Postbank warned that only two payment cycles remain before Gold Cards are deactivated. Beneficiaries were advised not to delay the process, as queues and service delays are expected to increase closer to the deadline.

The bank said beneficiaries who fail to replace their cards in time will not be able to access grant payments using the old cards.

“The window period for replacing SASSA Gold Cards is closing fast, and we are concerned that many beneficiaries may think they still have sufficient time, or that the period will be extended,” said Postbank chief commercial officer Thami Cele.

Cele confirmed that the deadline will not be extended.

“Anyone without a Black Card after the deadline will need to first obtain a new card before they can access payments,” he said.

Free replacement process

Postbank said the replacement process is free and can be completed at designated service points inside participating retailers nationwide.

Beneficiaries can collect their Postbank Black Cards at selected Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and SPAR stores. A USSD code, 120355#, can be used to locate the nearest collection point.

The bank also confirmed that beneficiaries may collect their cards in any province, regardless of where their grant was originally approved.

Important information for beneficiaries

Postbank reminded beneficiaries that:

  • Card replacement is free of charge
  • Gold Cards will stop working after 31 August 2026
  • A valid ID or temporary ID is required to collect a Black Card
  • Black Cards are activated immediately
  • Existing balances will automatically transfer to the new card
  • No visit to a SASSA office is required after receiving the new card

Scam warning issued

Beneficiaries have also been urged to remain alert to scams and fraudulent activity.

Postbank said genuine Black Cards must clearly display Postbank branding on the front.

“If it is not written Postbank, then it is a scam,” the bank warned.

The bank added that beneficiaries do not need to complete or sign any forms during the collection process. Anyone asked to do so has been advised to refuse and report the matter to Postbank immediately.

Beneficiaries requiring assistance can contact Postbank’s toll-free helpline on 0800 535 455.

Postbank said it remains committed to ensuring that grant payments continue safely and without disruption for beneficiaries across South Africa.
