Daggafontein residents urged to work with police to combat crime

Residents were encouraged to report gender-based violence, femicide and drug-related crimes during a community engagement led by Springs SAPS.

The Springs SAPS, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Social Development (DSD), the Ke Moja Crew, local CPF members and the Daggafontein community, held a community engagement on June 3, which focused on crime prevention, social cohesion and substance abuse awareness.

The local police shared that during the engagement, Warrant Officer Kgomotso Lungu educated residents about South Africa’s diverse communities and the importance of peaceful coexistence.

“We are a diverse community in South Africa, and we have been living side by side in harmony,” said Lungu.

The police said Lungu encouraged residents to work with law enforcement by reporting criminal activities, including gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) cases and drug dealers targeting young people.

She asked community members to report GBVF cases to the police and also report people who are selling drugs to our children.

The SAPS said that the representatives from the Gauteng Department of Social Development informed residents about the process of registering a child for rehabilitation and explained the procedures children undergo once accepted into a rehabilitation centre.

“The meeting also provided community members with an opportunity to raise concerns. Residents informed police that after June 15, they did not want illegal foreigners in Daggafontein, alleging that they were involved in criminal activities,” shared the local police.

The Zimbabwean Community Union appealed for patience and understanding from residents while arrangements are being made to assist Zimbabwean nationals.

“We ask the Daggafontein community to persevere with us as we are organising buses from Zimbabwe to come and collect our people out of South Africa,” a representative said.

Closing the engagement, Lungu reminded residents that the SAPS remains committed to protecting everyone living in the country.

“The role of the South African Police is to serve and protect all the people in South Africa regardless of race or colour,” she concluded.
