Thandolwethu Magagula earns Valke call-up for FNB Grant Khomo Week

Known as “The Dog”, the young front-row player impressed selectors with his versatility across all three front-row positions.

Fifteen-year-old Thandolwethu ‘The Dog’ Magagula, a learner from Springs Boys’ High School, was selected to represent Valke Rugby Union at the highly prestigious FNB U6 Grant Khomo Week from June 29 to July 3, one of South Africa’s premier youth rugby tournaments.

Held annually at Kearsney College on the outskirts of Durban, the FNB Grant Khomo Week showcases the very best U16 rugby talent from across the country.

The tournament brings together elite players selected from provincial unions nationwide, providing a platform where future stars of South African rugby begin their journey toward higher honours.

His father, Selby Magagula, said that Thandolwethu’s selection is the result of months of dedication, resilience, and outstanding performances.

Selby shared that after successfully navigating the rigorous and highly competitive selection process within the Valke Under-16 Doom Gouws squad, Thandolwethu captured the attention of coaches and selectors with his relentless work ethic and fearless approach to the game.

His father said Thandolwethu’s breakthrough moment came during a fixture at the iconic Loftus Versfeld Stadium, where he was invited to join the Grant Khomo squad bench against the Limpopo Blue Bulls.

“In a display of remarkable versatility and maturity beyond his years, Magagula was called upon to perform in all three front-row positions during the match – hooker, loosehead prop, and tighthead prop.

“The young forward delivered a standout performance, dominating in both the set pieces and open play.

“His ability to anchor the scrum, compete physically against older opponents, and adapt seamlessly across the front row impressed coaching staff and selectors alike,” said Selby.

Selby said that that performance ultimately secured Thandolwethu’s call-up to the official Valke Under-16 Grant Khomo team, where he will serve as a rare and highly valuable hybrid front-row player, capable of operating effectively at hooker, loosehead prop, and tighthead prop.

“What makes Magagula’s achievement even more impressive is his age. While Grant Khomo Week is designed for Under-16 players, he will be competing against many players who are older and physically more mature than him.

“Yet his performances have demonstrated that age is no barrier to talent, determination, and courage,” added the father.

Known affectionately as ‘The Dog’ for his relentless competitiveness and fearless attitude on the field, Selby explained that Thandolwethu has become an inspiration to aspiring young rugby players in Springs and beyond.

The father shared that coaches describe him as a player who never backs down from a challenge, consistently putting his body on the line for his team and embracing every opportunity to improve.

Selby said that his son’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that hard work, dedication, discipline, and belief in one’s abilities can open doors to extraordinary opportunities.

As all eyes turn to Kearsney College for the 2026 FNB Grant Khomo Week, the rugby community will be watching closely to see how the young front-row sensation performs on one of the country’s biggest school rugby stages.

For Springs Boys’ High School, Valke Rugby, and the wider Springs community, Selby said that Thandolwethu’s selection is a source of immense pride and a testament to the quality of rugby talent emerging from the region.
