Springs hockey brothers Chigozie and Chidozie Umeh achieve provincial selection

The 17-year-olds say years of hard work and supporting each other have earned them provincial honours as they prepare to compete against the country's best young hockey players.

Twin brothers Chigozie and Chidozie Umeh (17) from Springs Boys High School have earned provincial honours after being selected to represent Eastern Gauteng Hockey during the school holidays.

The twins told the Springs Advertiser that the achievement marks an important milestone for them, who have grown alongside each other both on and off the hockey field.

For Chidozie, the selection was the reward for months of hard work and sacrifice.

“I was honestly very excited and grateful. It was a proud moment because all the hard work, early mornings, training, and sacrifices finally paid off,” he said.

He added that the honour has motivated him to work even harder because he believes it is only the beginning of his hockey journey.

Representing Easterns Gauteng carries great significance for him.

“It means I get to represent my school, my club, my family, and everyone who has supported me. Wearing the Easterns’ colours is something I’m very proud of, and I want to make the province proud of my performances.”

His twin brother, Chigozie, described the moment he received the news as one he will never forget.

“I froze for a second, then it hit me. All the early mornings, tough practices, and doubts were worth it. I called my family first. It was pure relief and pride,” he said.

He believes the selection is proof that discipline and perseverance pay off.

“Growing up, provincial colours felt far away. Making Easterns Gauteng tells me that if you stay disciplined and trust the process, doors open. It is validation, but also a responsibility to represent my school and community well.”

Sharing the achievement together has made the experience even more meaningful for the brothers. Chidozie shared that having his twin by his side has made a significant difference throughout their hockey journey.

“We have always pushed each other to improve, supported each other through difficult times, and celebrated each other’s achievements. Having someone who understands the journey makes it even more special.”

Chigozie echoed those sentiments, saying they have always inspired each other to improve.

“We have pushed each other since we first picked up sticks. Every sprint, every loss, every win, we did it together.

“To get selected side by side means we are living proof that hard work and brotherhood get you far. He makes me better every day.”

The pair have encouraged one another during training sessions and matches, constantly motivating each other to stay focused and perform at their best.

While Chidozie is proud of earning his place in the provincial team through consistency and self-belief, Chigozie credits his strong work ethic and composure under pressure for helping him stand out.

“I have focused on never switching off. Even when we’re tired or down, I try to stay calm, make the right pass, and lead by effort. Coaches notice consistency more than flashy plays,” he said.

Both brothers praised Springs Boys’ High School for playing an important role in their development. Chigozie said the school’s coaches instilled discipline and strong fundamentals while exposing the team to quality opposition every week.

Looking ahead to the provincial tournament, which is taking place from July 14 to 18, the twins expressed that they are eager to test themselves against some of the country’s top young hockey players, learn from experienced coaches and contribute to Easterns Gauteng’s success.

Chidozie also hopes the opportunity will help him progress towards his long-term ambition of playing university hockey and eventually competing internationally.

The brothers expressed gratitude to everyone who has supported their journey, including God, their parents, family, teammates and coaches.

They both thanked the current first-team coach, Bonga Hlatywayo, former coach Bongani Pellemu, the school’s team manager Bronwyn Brits and everyone who has encouraged them throughout the season.

Reflecting on his journey, Chigozie offered advice to aspiring young hockey players.

“Don’t sleep on your dream. Playing for the province will not come to you; you have to chase it. Be the first to arrive and the last to leave at training. Talent helps, but consistency and hunger get you the jersey.”

The twins are appealing for sponsorship to help cover the cost of essential hockey equipment as they prepare to represent Eastern Gauteng at the provincial tournament.
