The ice is officially broken
Contrary to its name ‘Icebreaker’ which is derived from the race taking place in the coldest time of Autumn with the Winter winds being in full swing, racers were treated to optimal running conditions this year
The ‘Icebreaker’ race was officially carried out and eMalahleni residents showed up in their numbers to break a sweat in the name of breaking the ice on Saturday, May 25 at Highveld Mall.
Contrary to its name ‘Icebreaker’ which is derived from the race taking place in the coldest time of Autumn with the Winter winds being in full swing, racers were treated to optimal running conditions this year.
The annual race which has ran for a number of years now saw a much welcomed growth spur of 15% this years with 72 participants tackling the five kilometre fun run, 205 participants who entered for the 11 kilometre leg and 314 participants who did the 21.1 kilometre long distance.
Winners of the 21.1km long distance leg were Graham Malinga for the men and Lorraine Roets for the ladies.
The 11km race was won by Brittany van der Merwe for the ladies, who is also the first junior lady to take the title and alongside her was Joseph Mkabinde for the men.
All participants received a t-shirt and the 11 and 21km participants also received a medal
