Bridge collision leaves two seriously injured
A pedestrian and a motorcyclist were rushed to hospital after being involved in an accident on the bridge crossing the N12.
The accident occurred on Friday, April 11 at about 13:30. Traffic had come to a standstill and was moving at a snail’s pace, bumper to bumper.
A witness to the accident was travelling along Hans Strydom Street from Klipfontein to Reyno Ridge when he saw a woman wanting to cross the road from the right.
“I saw there was a woman who wanted to cross the street. I stopped, giving her a gap to cross the road,” said the motorist.
The motorist was unaware that a motorcyclist was coming to overtake him on his left.
“As she walked in front of my bakkie, I noticed a bike coming up along the left of my vehicle and it was already too late to warn her. The motorcyclist hit the pedestrian,” the motorist continued.
The motorcyclist was flung off his Gomoto motorcycle and landed on the median, while the pedestrian was knocked off her feet.
Fortunately, about four cars down from the accident was a paramedic who was quickly able to tend to both injured parties.
Langamed Emergency Management Services arrived on scene and continued with the stabilisation of the two patients.
The motorcyclist sustained neck and spinal injury as well as fractured his left knee. The pedestrian suffered multiple abrasions and lacerations as well as injuries to the head.
Both were transported to Witbank Hospital for further treatment.
