Scouts tour takes a turn for the worst
A bakkie rolled near the N4 toll plaza injuring four people including an 11-year-old girl.
The bakkie was part of a three car convoy traveling from Pretoria to Nelspruit for a scouts’ tour.
On April 26 at about 11:00 bakkie carrying five people overturned when the driver lost control. Two passengers and the unharmed driver where taken to Emalahleni Private Hospital. The 11-year-old girl and a critically injured man were reportedly transported to Life Cosmos Hospital. The weekend highway traffic quickly became congested and traffic was backed up for kilometers as one lane was blocked off while emergency services were working.
The two other vehicles were apparently already past the toll gate when the accident happened. As soon as they became aware of what happened they turned around.
Solange Soares-Nicholson from TRAC said that the accident response unit is on call 24 hours a day, and was present at the scene to assist authorities and paramedics.
“We urge motorists to respect the rules of the road, and to respect the people that are involved in such tragic events. Therefore do not slow down to watch, or try and take pictures, officially it is considered a crime scene.” said the TRAC spokesperson. They try and divert traffic away from an accident wherever possible and keep traffic flowing smoothly.
The man later died of his wounds in the hospital and the young girl is still in a serious condition. However, the driver apparently only sustained a laceration to his hand and was not admitted to hospital.
