Take up honour, join the scouts
When I think leadership, I think scouts, did you know eMalahleni has its own scouts group?
“I have been in scouting for about 23 years, the 2nd Coalfield Scout Group had been around here in eMalahleni for over 50 years,” said Brian Sulter, Troop Scouter.
Brian, like any other scout started off as a cub at a young age and worked his way through the four advancement ranks within the cubs to become a scout. As he matured he completed his five advancements in the scouts to become a Troop Scouter and now leads the 2nd Coalfield Scouts.
“Throughout scouting, we constantly build on leadership, good morals, and ethics,” added Brian.
There is a fun aspect to scouting to, there is plenty of outdoor activity with organised outings, scouts and cubs learn about nature and its conservation as well as crafts and survival, but most importantly teamwork.
Cubs tend to be from age 7 to 11, once they near their teen years and have attained the relevant advancements; these cubs are then promoted to scout level, where they get more of a hands-on experience on what scouting has to offer.
“We learn about the wilderness, fires and cooking, knotting, camping and live by a set of laws which encourage us to be moral citizens, as the saying goes, ‘on a scouts honour.’”
Lifelong friendships are made in the scouts, not just locally but as far as internationally, scouting is in fact an international organisation.
Annually the scouts have a jamboree over the internet where they connect with other scouts from all over the world, as well as an over air jamboree using handsets.
The scout groups of each district also have mixed camps whereby the scouts of Middelburg, Passou and 2nd Coalfields get together for a fun learning experience.
