Accidents leave motorists battered and bruised
Altogether 46 accidents were reported in Witbank policing area over the weekend.
Of these accidents a case of culpable homicide was opened after a driver of a Kia Picanto allegedly hit a pedestrian pushing a bicycle along the N4 Highway on May 29.
The pedestrian was certified dead by paramedics and the driver of the Picanto was taken to hospital for treatment.
According to police reports, the driver of a blue Ford Jetta was arrested by police after failing to produce a valid license. The driver showed police an expired learner’s license and the vehicle’s license was outdated.
The suspicion occurred when the Jetta allegedly clipped a truck with trailer in tow, causing the truck to come to a stop on May 28 along the Kleinkopje road.
On May 31 at about 23:00 an accident occurred along the N4 just past Schoongezicht, where four vehicles were involved.
The collision between the four vehicles, a white Toyota Quantum carrying 10 passengers, a white Chevrolet Cruise, a red Ford Figo, and a white Toyota Avanza, caused quite a delay on the highway as lanes had to be reduced while paramedics from Langamed Emergency Management Services, JD-Med, ER24 and Provincial Ambulance Services tended to the injured passengers and drivers. Injured were taken to various hospitals in eMalahleni for further treatment.
That same evening a pedestrian was injured in Jellicoe Street. The driver of a white Toyota Raider reported to police that he was changing lanes when the vehicle in front indicated to change lanes, the driver attempted to swerve out but was too late and allegedly hit a pedestrian.
The pedestrian was taken to Witbank Hospital for further treatment after sustaining leg injuries.
“The police caution motorists to maintain safe following distances and adhere to the rules of the road, which are in place for the public’s own safety,” said Sgt David Ratau.
