Ward 23 Councillor Tebogo Mabula was allegedly assaulted by three men at his home in KwaGuqa Extension 10 at about 20:00 on Sunday, August 10.
According to him two members of his community had problems because of the position of a peg to demarcate their yards.
Apparently one of the community members had complained to him about the peg. The complainant was advised that a meeting would be called together with the neighbour to look at a way to resolve the issue.
“I called both men to a meeting together with the ward committee, but only one man came to the meeting. Later I heard rumours that the absent man was making threats against members of my community. Even members of CPF confirmed the threats. It later turned out that they were true,” said the councillor.
Cllr Mabula said he was attacked by three men while at his home with his family. The suspect knocked violently at his door and asked for the councillor to come out of the house, when his wife answered the door.
When Cllr Mabula came out, he found two suspects assaulting his brother. When he tried to intervene, he was also assaulted and stabbed with a panga on his head and hand. Cllr Mabula was helped by a neighbour.
Cllr said neighbours and family members phoned the office of the executive mayor, regional task team (RTT) and other officials of the municipality to tell them what had happened.
Cllr Mabula said officials from ANC National Executive, RTT, premier’s office and provincial executive committee visited him on a fact-finding mission.
“Somebody gave them wrong information and even members of my community were confused about the distorted information. Some were very angry and wanted to attack the member. I had to call a meeting to calm them down and told them not to take the law into their own hands,” added Cllr Mabula.
The suspect was arrested and released according to Cllr Mabula, who said his life was still in danger. He said he was trying his best to stop members of his community from confronting the suspect.
“I am tasked to help community members in my ward and will do that to my best ability,” said Cllr Mabula.
Cllr Mabula is due for two operations to his hand and head and is presently receiving medical attention.
Municipal spokesperson, Mr Lebohang Mofokeng, said: “Since the alleged incident, the ward councillor has not been in the office to give a report on what exactly happened. We will wait for the councillor to come and give the report. At this moment it is not clear as to what might have been the reason for his attack.”
