A vehicle crashed through a wall in Gordon Street over the weekend. The damage to the wall is extensive as well as the telephone pole that was split in half by the impact of the vehicle.
On Friday, October 10 the family was relaxing in their home at about 20:30 when they heard a deafening sound of the crash, which they said sounded like an explosion.
The white BMW had two occupants inside, who seemed not to be seriously injured. The house owner ran outside to their backyard that was littered with pieces of concrete and glass. The paramedics took the driver and the passenger to hospital for examination after the accident.
“We were blessed that none of us were injured and that no other major damage was done,” said the resident.
According to the residents of the Gordon Street, this is not the first time that a vehicle had crashed through a wall in the same way. The incident of Friday has been the third case in the last couple of years.
Residents say that the accident is a part of a bigger problem, that Gordon Street is unsafe as there should be more care taken by the authorities to ensure driver safety and the safety of the public, such as putting up a four way stop at the intersection closest to where the car went through the wall.
Once all the rubble was cleared there was still the issue of repairing the wall. A wire fence was put up for some measure of safety. However everything in the backyard was still completely exposed to anyone driving or walking up and down the busy street.
On Monday, October 13 the neighbour reported that three unknown men jumped over the fence and stole things lying in the backyard, but before he could stop them they had already escaped and ran off with the goods.
“I feel very unsafe without a wall here, they already stole from our backyard while I was not at home,” she said.
The municipality has been contacted about a possible four-way stop at this problem location, but no comment has yet been received.
