Copper awareness campaign held at Clewer

Vosman Police Station commander, Brigadier Makhosazana Kheswa recently invited community members of Clewer into a copper theft awareness campaign after a widespread theft of copper was reported at the station.

The campaign was held at the Clewer Evangelical Church recently. The community of Clewer as well as the surrounding Sector 4 members attended the event. Business Against Crime (BACSA), CPF members, Second hand good dealers, local mining companies, Anglo American, Transnet, Eskom sector managers and all local companies were also present during the meeting. The companies informed members of the community about their duties they are performing and what the community should know as well as issuing promotional info.

“Theft of copper as well as none-ferrous metals is a huge concern and affects local companies as well as the community on a day to day basis. What can be done to stop copper theft?” reads a statement from the police.

Mpumalanga Non- Ferrous Crime Combating Committee (NFMCCC) is a committee that was formed to address all ferrous and non-ferrous related crimes in co-operation with South African Police Services (SAPS) in the Mpumalanga Province. This committee has major partners in the business sectors such as BACSA, Eskom, Telkom, Columbus and mines as stakeholders.

The committee is tasked with organising awareness campaigns as well as making presentations to the second hand Goods dealers and communities. They have the cooperation with SAPS by fighting the theft of none-Ferrous and Ferrous Metals.

Mr Itu Modise addressed the people about the frequent stolen materials such as copper, coal, pipes, tyres, transformers, drill bits, solar panels, poles and other materials. He encouraged the people to join hands in order to fight crime.

“Please help us to fight crime, give us information as there are rewards leading to arrest depending on the merit of the case,” said Mr Modise.

The people were also told about vandalism and money spendt to prevent criminal activities and security to stop or prevent crime.
