The accident occurred on March 30 when a taxi traveling from Nelspruit to Pretoria collided with the man who had chosen to cross the highway on foot.
“I saw a man walking forward on the highway it looked like he was waiting and then suddenly he started running in front of us,” said Mr Zamokuhle Maseko, the driver of the taxi.

Another passenger of the taxi claims that the man should have used the footbridge which was just a few meters away, this would have prevented the accident.
“Why do people cross the road when there is a bridge nearby,” questioned one of the passengers, still shocked at what had happened.
The man in his attempt to cross the highway was struck by the taxi and collided with the windscreen. He was then flung over the top of the taxi, landing on the highway amid traffic.
“He died from severe injuries both internally and externally, including the amputation,” said Mr Julius Mashabela, paramedic from JD-Med EMS.
The taxi driver managed to regain control of the taxi veering it off the road and into the shrubbery.
The man was pronounced dead at about 15:45, roughly 10 minutes after the incident occurred. In addition two passengers sustained injuries in the accident.
“It was God that helped me,” said Maseko, relieved that he and his passengers had survived the ordeal.
The 31-year-old man has not yet been formerly identified by next of kin.
