Muggings and thefts are once again on the rise in the eMalahleni and more cases are reported daily at Witbank Police Station.
On Wednesday, March 30 a man told police how he had been robbed of his cell phone and other possessions when he was on duty as security at a complex.
The victim was in the Reyno Ridge area and had just clocked in for his shift when seven men approached him.
“I was busy talking on my phone so I did not notice the unknown men at first until one of the men put a firearm against me,” said the anonymous victim.
He reported that one of the other suspects was armed with a knife, another with a screwdriver and one with a firearm.
“The man that was armed with the screwdriver pushed the weapon against me and threatened me to hand over all my valuable possessions.”
Earlier that day another case was reported.
Ben Ncube was on his way to work at 06:30 the morning and was waiting for transport, when four men approached him.
Ncube was waiting at a local pick up station in the CBD (Central Business District) when one of the four suspects grabbed his phone.
“It all happened so quickly and when I realized what just happened to me the suspects were gone,” said Ncube angrily.
“People must be aware and not carry too much cash or expensive items when walking to work or home,” Const. David Ratau, spokesperson for Witbank SAPS warned.
