When getting into an argument with a stranger one does not expect to end up in the hospital no matter how heated it gets.
For Nico Hlatshwayo this was exactly the case. He recalls enjoying the night out on Saturday in Old Coronation at a local tavern. At about 00:00 midnight he left the tavern to go home when another man happened to leave at the same time. The victim remembers seeing the suspect at the tavern also drinking but the two men did not know each other.
After a while walking down the same road they apparently got into an argument. The victim cannot recall what the fight was about but apparently due to the language barrier the argument got out of hand and became very heated.
The victim was Tonga speaking while the suspect was apparently Phedi speaking. It was then that the suspect drew a firearm and without warning shot the 19 year old victim in the leg. He recalls falling to the ground and then blacking out. The next thing he recalls was waking up in Witbank Hospital.
“I was badly hurt and confused by this terrible act,” said the victim while still in hospital.
Doctors say that he may be discharged on Friday April 15 but the wound is very serious and he cannot walk yet. A case of attempted murder has been opened at the Witbank SAPS after they came to take his statement in the hospital however no arrests have yet been made.
