On September 17 police made two of the nine arrests, the first was at the Witbank long distance taxi rank in the central business district, police were conducting a stop and search when a man approached them pointing out a possible suspect, police searched the man and found him in possession of four pinches of dagga.

That same day police searched a man on Main Street and found him in possession of dagga he was also taken into custody.

On September 19 police arrested another five suspects for possession of drugs. Four of the arrests took place at the long distance taxi rank, one of the individuals arrested there was found in possession of rocks and dagga, while the other four were found in possession of dagga. The last arrest took place in Klipfontein when police arrested a man in possession of not only dagga but also rocks and heroin to the total value of R10 000.

On September 24 police made another two arrests, one of the arrests took place in the central business district, a man known to police to have previous drug convictions was spotted and searched, he was found in possession of a spoon, syringe and a bag which was suspected to have contained heroin, he was taken into custody. The second arrest occurred when police noticed a woman pushing a pram with child around the Die Heuwel area, she was going from house to house asking for money. Police searched the pram and found the woman to be in possession of drugs.

“The woman was arrested and the child was given to her family while she remains in custody,” said Capt Eddie Hall, Witbank Police communications liaison.

As the fight against drugs continues throughout eMalahleni, police warn the public not to partake or sell narcotics as it is a punishable offence and will leave you with a criminal record should you be found guilty in court.

A drug awareness campaign will be hosted by Crescent of Hope in association with the Witbank Muslim Jamaat on October 14 at the new Town Mosque site on the corner of Nicol and Dahlia Streets.

The program will begin at 15:00 wit the first item being for mothers and sisters from 15:00 to 16:00, and the main program starting at 18:15 for 18:30.

Speakers on the day include Mr Rafiq Mayet from the Magaliesburg Health Centre, as well as recovering substance abusers, and police representatives.
