Glencore hands over new firefighting hub in Ferrobank

Emergency response times in Kwa-Guqa are set to improve following the completion of a dedicated base featuring a drill tower and wash bay.

Glencore Coal has officially handed over a newly completed R18.6m fire station in Ferrobank to the Emalahleni Local Municipality, strengthening emergency response services in Kwa-Guqa and surrounding communities.
The handover took place on August 14, with the Kwa-Guqa Fire Station expected to bring firefighting services closer to residents and improve response times to household fires, veld fires and other emergencies.
The project was initiated in 2024, with the partners identifying the need for emergency infrastructure that could improve response times and strengthen the municipality’s ability to protect lives and property.

Faster response times

Glencore Coal’s general manager for community and regulatory affairs, Noel Pillay, said the location of emergency services was critical to limiting the impact of fires.

“When we broke ground on this project in 2024, we spoke about the importance of having emergency services closer to the community, enabling faster response times and helping to save lives. Today, that vision has become a reality,” he said.

The station provides firefighters with a dedicated operational base equipped to support emergency response. It includes a main firehouse, wash bay, drill tower, generator room, compressor and equipment storeroom, parking facilities and supporting infrastructure.

The site has also been fully paved and securely fenced, creating a safer environment for emergency personnel and protecting the equipment required during
firefighting operations.

Vital support for emergency personnel

Acting Mayor Thembi Tshabalala said the project is ultimately about ensuring firefighters have the resources they need to protect residents.

“Our firefighters put their lives at risk every day, running towards danger when others are running away to save lives, protect homes and keep our communities safe.”

Tshabalala said the station would strengthen the municipality’s ability to provide essential emergency services to the community.

“This facility gives them the support and infrastructure they need to carry out that vital work, and we are deeply grateful for their courage, dedication and service.”

Pillay said the investment was also intended to leave a long-term legacy in the communities surrounding the operation.

“We are proud to have worked alongside the municipality and our stakeholders to deliver infrastructure that addresses a critical community need and will provide a lasting benefit to the community.”
