
Witbank’s Station Commander, Brig Delisiwe Motha sent a strong warning three months ago about business owners that sell skin lightening creams.

Boxes filled with skin lightening creams were confiscated on Thursday, September 29 at the Central Business District.
She said these banned substances will be personally removed from the shelves by her. On Thursday, September 29 she visited the Central Business District (CBD) once again together with some police officials from the station.

As police were patrolling the Central Business District of eMalahleni. A number of boxes containing skin lightening creams were removed from the streets on Thursday, September 29.
They patrolled streets such as Arras, Watermeyer and Extension 8 in Klipfontein. The yellow bone operation saw a total of eight arrests made in eight different shops. The operation started in the morning at 10:30 all the way to the afternoon at 12:40. Suspects found with these products were given a fine of R300. Should they repeat the same offence more than three times, they will be sent to jail.

According to section 19 (1) of Medicine and Related Substance Control Act 101 of 1965, selling skin lightening cream does not comply with prescribed requirements.
As such lightening creams with hydroquinone were banned in South Africa in 1992 and on August 16 Ghana followed suit in removing them from their market.
Extensive after effects of the products leads to skin cancer.
