The awareness campaign was held at Hlalanikahle Community Hall recently. The Film & Publication Board stated that they regulate the media environment through the classification of content by:
*Maintaining relevance to the values and norms of South African society through scientific research*Balancing the right to freedom of expression with an obligation to protect children from exposure to potentially disturbing, harmful and inappropriate materials.
*Protecting children from sexual exploitation in media content in order to educate the broader South African society to make informed choices.

Recently FPB issues a statement in that they have partner with the Hawks, Facebook, UNISA, the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services, Google SA and Media Monitoring Africa, as part of joint activities to mark Safer Internet Day (SID).

The collaboration will see the organisations raise awareness on cyber safety issues particularly amongst youth and join forces to combat piracy of counterfeit DVD’s “Each year the FPB partners with key organisations as part of its awareness-raising efforts to promote a safer Internet for all” reads a statement from the organisation.

It was also pointed out that FPB’s research shows that digital streams of media distribution and consumption are gaining popularity in South Africa. Internet access is itself a driver of these trends which is also available through mobile devices including smart phones. In another research conducted in four provinces, findings showed that the rates of availability of smart phone’s amongst learners is 90%. So vigilance is critical by parents, teachers and guardians and they must monitor Internet usage by youth in their care.

Other organisations made their presentation during the campaign.
