The initiative was used to tell the workers about their rights and responsibilities as a means to promote greater compliance. The deputy minister also reflected on the key challenges in the labour relations environment including recent amendments to key pieces of labour legislation. The initiative was held at the local taxi rank on Thursday, May 4.


Deputy Minister of Labour Inkosi Patekile Holomisa and Mr Lucky Mkhonto an official of the department during an outreach programme held on Thursday, May 4 at the local taxi rank.

Minister Holomisa allowed people to ask questions. He answered some of the questions and referred others to department officials. Workers were urged to know about their rights and labour laws and report companies who do not comply with the countries labour laws. He talked about different issues and stated the departments mission which is to regulate the South Africa labour market for a sustainable economy through:

*Appropriate legislation and regulations
*Inspection, compliance monitoring and enforcement
*Protection of human rights
*Provision of employment services
*Promoting equity
*Social and income protection and social dialogue.
Minister Holomisa also added the values of the department which are:
*Treating employees with care, dignity and respect
*Respect and promote:
*Client centred services
*Accountability
*Integrity and ethical behaviour
*Learning and development
*Living the Batho Pele Principles
*Living the principles of the Department’s Service Charter
*Inculcating these values through their performance management system.

Workers were encouraged to report any companies to the labour department centres and also report the department workers.
