Give a book – because reading matters

Darryl who is a Math Tutor and also works at St Andrew’s Nursery and Aftercare Centre is passionate about books and reading.

British writer and journalist, Philip Womack was quoted about the love for books.

He said,

“Books are gems. Books which leaves your spine aching from sitting up all night reading them. Books whose characters live in the bright corners of your mind.Books which hold the limits of space and time within them. Books which teach you all that man knows and all that man wants. Books are power”

Darryl Seager, a local lover of books and literature nodded his head in agreement.
Darryl who is a Math Tutor and also works at St Andrew’s Nursery and Aftercare Centre is passionate about books and reading.

He said there are so many advantages of reading.

“Reading develop your verbal abilities, it improves focus and concentration. I am sure it also reduces stress,” he said excitedly.

Darryl said books can take you away to far away places where you imagination can run free.

Darryl Seager is reading to Nolo Ntuli, Ntando Mkhaliphi, Katlego Mogogabe, Ng’phiwe Ntuli and Rhulani Shongwe.

“You are only limited by what you can imagine, and the worlds described in books, as well as other peoples views and opinions, will help you expand your understanding of what is possible.”

After reading to kids in the aftercare centre, Darryl realised that there is a huge gap in their reading ability.
He decided to change this and is collecting books which he wants to hand out to schools to invest in the younger generations and help them appreciate books.

“There is this very popular saying, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” Ideas written down have changed the world and the destiny of many,” Darryl said.

Darryl started his ‘Give-a-child-a-book’ project and appeals to the community to help in making this project a success story.

If you have books you would like to donate you can deliver it at St Andrew’s Nursery and Aftercare Centre situated at 30 French Street.

You can also contact Darryl on 064 908 6686 if you are interested in becoming part of this project.
