It took six hours to retrieve the body of the man buried under rocks in an abandoned mine pit.

The 27-year old man died on Wednesday, July 26 after rocks fell on him while he was busy digging for coal in the mine pit.

The mine pit is situated next to the old Middelburg Road.

The Mines Rescue Service had the daunting task of getting the man’s body out of the mine pit that was clearly unstable.

The mine pit which no longer has support in place posed a threat because of the significant degeneration of its infrastructure.

A sigh of relief could be heard when all the members of the rescue team brought the body to the surface.

Ms Sandra Sambo, sister of the deceased said her brother, whose identity is withheld until he is formally been identified, made a living digging for coal and selling it to locals.
