On November 23, just passed 07:00, a motorist took the slipway between Mandela Street and OR Tambo Road that leads passed Saveways when he saw three male pedestrians crossing the street just ahead of him.

The driver told police that he hooted at the three men who were crossing the road, giving two of the men a chance to stop and avoid the vehicle.

The third male pedestrian wasn’t so lucky. He tried to turn around to avoid the Ford Ranger hurtling towards him, but instead his foot slipped on the rain-drenched tar and he fell directly into the path of the oncoming vehicle.


The scene of the terrible tragedy which unfolded at the intersection of Mandela Street and OR Tambo Road.

The 23-year old Mr TJ Mashekgana died on scene after sustaining serious head injuries and injuries to his chest and abdomen.

The driver of the Ford Ranger has been charged with culpable homicide.
