Eleven killed, seven seriously injured in horror crash on R575

The red and blue lights from various ambulance and police services broke the silence of the darkness of the tragedy that occurred on the R575.

On Tuesday, December 11 at approximately 20:45 a head on collision occurred on the R575 (Van Dyksdrift Road).

The vehicles involved in the collision were a concrete mixer and a 21 seater midi bus that was towing a trailer.

It’s alleged that the midi bus was travelling towards Johannesburg while the truck was travelling towards Middelburg.

Emergency services from eMalahleni and the surrounding area responded to the scene.

As paramedics arrived on scene they were faced with carnage and a few remaining survivors that needed immediate medical treatment.

Mr Alan Manamela (54-year-old) the driver of the concrete mixer was entrapped inside the cab of the truck.

Legacy Emergency Specialists treated Manamela and the Jaws-of-Life had to be used to cut him out of the cab. He was transported to Life Cosmos Hospital and on Wednesday morning, December 12 he was transferred to Milpark Hospital.

He sustained serious head injuries.

Langamed Emergency Management and ER24 all transported patients from the ripped midi bus to various hospitals for further treatment.

The total number of fatalities on scene was 11, nine adults and two children.

More and more mini busses from Nelspruit and Maputo are travelling along the R575 onto the road past Duvha Power Station, then onto the Bethal Road, once it becomes Watermeyer they turn off onto the N12 highway to avoid the toll gate fee.
