Minenhle (8), Blessing (6), Shanique (4) and Ettiene (11 months) will be laid to rest next week.

They will be buried on Tuesday, January 8.

The four children were allegedly murdered by their mother late in December.

Police spokesman Brigadier Leonard Hlathi says the 24 year old mother and the children were last seen together on Boxing Day.

Their landlord, Ms Mathilda Mahlangu, said all seemed to be well with the family at the time.

The mother appeared in court in Absentia and the case was postponed to January 7.

Brig Hlathi said she is still in hospital, but he could not say what the reason for her hospitalization is.

The Department of Social Development spoke out after the senseless murder and said they condemn in the strongest possible terms this kind of inhumane behaviour,

“Particularly as we have just wrapped up the 16 days of activism against the abuse of women and children in the previous month”.

“Our greatest sympathy goes to the grandmother of the victims, family, friends and those directly affected by the matter at hand.”

The department is already offering support and counselling to the family, and members of the public who might need the services of the department.

This tragic incident further highlights an urgent need for families and communities to seek help when in distress instead of keeping silent and only to act beyond comprehensible means.

Mothers and parents are urged make use of available options in instances where they are unable to care for their children.

“We advise on giving them to authorities where the child will ultimately be taken to places of care and safety or where alternative foster parents can be an option.”
