Help find a solution for Heinrich Street’s bridge problem
The R547 is a busy road with a lot of heavy vehicle traffic using it daily
The little bridge in Heinrich Street in Ga-Nala the elderly uses daily to get to town has been blocked off after several complaints that it is unsafe.
According to Cllr Dirk Grobler from the Democratic Alliance, one of the slabs on the bridge lifted slightly and stands out about 7cm.
“That is the only indication that there is damage to the bridge,” he said.
Cllr Grobler said the municipality blocked the bridge off by throwing heaps of sand on either side of it.
“The municipality does not have the money to fix this bridge. It has been five years since the bridge in Blancheville washed away and up to date, it is a struggle just to get the municipality to fix that one. Our bridge will be next in line so no one knows how long fixing the Ga-Nala bridge will take.”
Cllr Grobler said the elderly are now forced to use the R547 to get to the shopping centre.
The R547 is a busy road with a lot of heavy vehicle traffic using it daily.
“The traffic on the R547 is already very busy and the chances of accidents on that road are much higher. This can result in fatalities.”
He suggested that residents in Ga-Nala participate in a petition asking the municipality to open the bridge. He also suggested that a three-way stop be erected where Quintin Street turns into the R547.
