Early childhood teachers left without certificates

They have been sent from pillar to post with lies in between and told different stories by the management of the school

Some teachers who completed courses in early childhood education programs are disappointed because they are still waiting for more than two years for their completion certificates.

The teachers, who trained at Siyathela Early Childhood Development School, allege that they started their training at the school in 2017.

They spend one year and three months to complete the course, but to date, they have not received their certificates, and they have not graduated.

They have been sent from pillar to post with lies in between and told different stories by the management of the school.

Furthermore, they were paying R1 600 monthly.

The problems started when the board members of the institution did not do their work.

One of the members resigned while another passed away and functions at the institution grounded into a halt.

While all this was happening, the students said they were not informed about all that, they were only given promises.

“We were promised that we will graduate, but weeks, months and years passed by, and we are still without any certificates. Later when we called, our calls were not answered. We were promised certificates and accommodation, but some of these promises were never fulfilled. Some of us were badly treated, and we stomached all that, just because we wanted to finish the course and graduate. We were denied a chance to graduate and be employed. Some of us intended to open our own pre-schools. There were a lot of other issues that we were not happy about. It was incompetence and unprofessionalism at its highest order,” the students pointed out.

Mr Erastus Maraba said while he was a committee member of the institution one of the assessors of the school, Ms Zanele Siboza pleaded with him to take over the running of the school after being told about the challenges.

He followed all the processes, and he is now in charge of the school.

He also apologised to the students. Mr Maraba is busy organising and making sure that the students receive their certificates.

An administrator of the school, Ms Zanele Masuku confirmed through a telephone conversation that they were faced with a lot of challenges and problems compounded by the dysfunctional board. She, however, promised that students will receive their certificates after all the processes have been undertaken.

The students said they will take the legal route against the school if the promises are not kept.
