The Emalahleni Local Municipality hosted a certificate handover ceremony on September 2 to celebrate the achievements of 10 rehabilitated individuals who completed a three-month electrical training programme.

The event, attended by the mayor, Vusi Nhlapho, learners, parents, stakeholders and municipal officials, marked an important milestone in the municipality’s ongoing efforts to fight substance abuse and create meaningful second-chance opportunities.

Skills for a second chance

The municipality said the programme was designed to equip participants with practical skills in electrical work, while also exposing them to additional competencies such as plumbing and related technical skills.

To support their participation, beneficiaries received stipends during the training period.

Community partnerships

The initiative was made possible through contributions raised during the 2025 Mayoral Golf Day, with support from individuals and companies who partnered with the municipality.

The programme was further strengthened by collaboration with a local training academy, the Department of Social Development, Seriti and local NPOs, all of whom played a role in providing rehabilitation support and skills development opportunities.

The municipality expressed pride in the beneficiaries’ achievements, noting that the programme represents a step forward in tackling substance abuse while promoting rehabilitation and skills development.
