No spark for some in Siyanqoba as electricity problems continue

Electricity is an ongoing issue of debate in the residential area of Siyanqoba.

Electricity is an ongoing issue of debate in the residential area of Siyanqoba.

This time around, some residents who are staying in the area since 2017 are still waiting for electricity whilst others who moved in after them have electricity in their houses.

The bone of contention is the electrification programme in the area. The area was established without electricity and water. The residents have water supplied to them via JoJo tanks.

“The electrification programme started in the veterans (former soldiers) section of the area, and it was explained to us that only 700 units will be electrified because the budget at that time allowed that and only 78 units were out. We were also told that the next phase will be the yellow bone section, our section. The explanation given was the programme will continue as budgets allow and by sections in order of their establishments. In other sections some units received electricity, but an explanation was given,” said one of the community leaders.

The residents are saying now some people who came after them want to have their houses electrified before them. It was also indicated that the residents from the yellow bone section were protecting the contractors putting electricity in their houses.

It was claimed that several meetings were held in the past, but some community members did not attend those meetings.

The two groups agreed that they will hold another meeting to resolve the issues.
