Gert will pedal for a good cause
Gert decided to cycle to Mossel Bay as it has been something to do on his bucket list for quite some time.

Gert Nagel is one of the three cyclists that will be cycling from eMalahleni to Mossel Bay for Rizpah.
He was asked a few questions about this exciting adventure that awaits him in less than a month’s time.
They will start the race on May 22 and they hope to arrive in Mossel Bay on May 28.
He started cycling in 2015 and from there he started catching momentum over the years and has not stopped.
Gert decided to cycle to Mossel Bay as it has been something to do on his bucket list for quite some time. In November last year he decided he’ll do it in 2021.
Then Wihl Vermaak said he wanted to join and that is when they decided to do it.
“Whilst we are doing such a big adventure, we should do it for a noble cause,” said Gert.
Dan Cronje told us about Rizpah and they knew it’s the type of organization that they would like to support.
Gert has been putting in long hours on his bike to prepare for the cycle. Besides this he has been eating and drinking right.
“On my long rides I eat more and drink more fluids to maintain energy levels,” said Gert.
There are a couple of challenges that Gert expects along the route.
“The biggest obstacle we are expecting is the cold winter in approaching fast and the route goes through some of the coldest parts of our country. Then as cyclists we are always vulnerable when on the road, that’s one of the main reasons we opted for a support vehicle which can be our mule for our much needed accessories and to act as a barrier between us and other vehicles,” said Gert.
Gert is excited about this cycling challenge, but in the same breath the excitement is somewhat dampened by the realization of the big effort it’s going to take to complete this quest.
“But as the training continues and the fitness levels goes up, the excitement is slowly overwhelming the fear,” said Gert.
According to Gert it would be great if they manage to raise R100 000 for Rizpah. They need so much more, but in the tough times like now R100 000 can help the kids so much.
“I am sure enough good will come out of this cycle so that the target can be reached,” said Gert.
“There can be no better cause than helping children, feeding them, clothing them and providing a safe place for them to live. All contributions will be aiding these children to get what most of us take for granted each day,” continued Gert.
The mental challenge to cover the distance of 1 450 km will be testing on the cyclists.
Gert said: “Most challenges are more of a mental challenge than a physical one, if the mind is strong, the body will follow. Make no mistake, it is going to be tough on the body as well, but that is why we put in the hard work to be as prepared as we physically can be. But I’m confident we will make it.”
