Mjemuka launches peripheral neuropathy movement

Peripheral neuropathy refers to the conditions that result when nerves that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord.

In 2018 while Themba Lephoko was running the Shanduka 21km race in Middelburg he noticed that the heaviness he felt previously in his legs had worsened.

Themba went jogging the following week and was unbalanced. He was also losing weight rapidly.

He then decided to visit Dr Thomas Cross who suspected a lack of blood circulation to his legs.

“For the next three months, my health deteriorated, and I had trouble walking,” Themba explained.

When Themba fell while running with his daughter, his family rushed him to the doctor. He was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy which is a nerve disorder.

Peripheral neuropathy refers to the conditions that result when nerves that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord from and to the rest of the body are damaged or diseased.

Themba received treatment at Steve Biko Academic Hospital. A thorough examination was done by the neurologist Dr Kroeg who found that his peripheral neuropathy was caused by a lack of Vitamin B12 in his body.

“It’s been a tough three years for me as this sickness has hampered me from running. I could not do my newspaper, Krush, I lost my property and could not maintain our family vehicles. My kids suffered at school as I could not pay their school fees, and we had days when we had nothing to eat,” Themba told the WITBANK NEWS

“I became highly depressed as I wondered what was wrong with me. I am grateful for my friends who have helped; as a result, I have launched the Mjemuka Peripheral Neuropathy Movement to raise funds for medication to help me and others too,” continued Themba.

This disease is painful as it renders one to be almost handicapped. Anyone who needs advice or can help may call Themba: 084 757 2310.
