Collision on R555 claims three lives

The three people who were killed in the collision had not been identified.

A collision between a truck and a car killed two people as well as a person who stopped and tried to help on the scene.

The accident occurred on Sunday, August 29 at approximately 01:00 on the old Middelburg Road (R555).

Three people were travelling in the sedan; the driver and the passenger were killed on impact after a head-on collision.

The third person that passed away was a motorist who upon arrival on the scene was hit by another vehicle. It is believed that he may have been trying to help at the time.

A male passenger in the sedan sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Middelburg Provincial Hospital. The driver of the truck escaped unharmed.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Vusi Shongwe bemoans these crashes and said that lives are needlessly lost.

He implored motorists to obey the rules and drive cautiously to avoid such deadly crashes.

“We must all play our part in road safety by obeying the rules. This includes not overtaking when it is not safe to do so or speeding excessively. Our law enforcement officers should remain stricter on errant driver behaviour,” said the MEC.

Shongwe also cautions members of the public to abide by Covid-19 regulations and desist from being on the road between 22:00 and 04:00 during curfew.

He mentioned that only drivers who have valid permits are permitted to drive after curfew, in line with prevailing Alert Level 3.

By the time the newspaper went to print, the three people who were killed in the collision had not been identified.
