Gert and Damion win Honeycomb Panorama Tour

Gert Janse van Rensburg and Damion Gomez knew that their work was cut out for them in the race

Local cyclists from eMalahleni took part in the Honeycomb PanoramaTour; they have been busy preparing for this event for months now and their hard work paid off.

With a whole lot of sponsors behind them, Gert Janse van Rensburg and Damion Gomez knew that their work was cut out for them.

The race started on Thursday, September 2 and ended on Sunday, September 5.

Gert and Damion’s team was called OTR Jasebenza and GG Cycles. With new kits and fresh legs the team was ready for stage 1.

Stage 1 took place on Thursday, September 2; it was 112km which was a hard day out on the bike as they headed through the mountains in White River.

They managed to take first place overall in their category beating the second team by five minutes giving us a healthy lead. With the win in the bag, Gert and Damion knew they had to take it easy for the next day if they wanted to keep the lead.

On Friday, September 3 it was a 76 km race. Everyone was a bit cautious as there were still two days of racing ahead. Gert and Damion finished first in a bunch sprint keeping their lead on second place.

Stage 3 was the Queen stage of the Panorama Tour; 104km with 2 100m of climbing.

The race stayed together until 50km when they turned around at the Sudwala Caves and they rode away from the other team increasing their lead with another 10 minutes on the second team and taking first place again.

On the last day, with tired legs Gert and Damion knew they had to give it their all on the short cycle to keep the win.

Stage 4 was the time trial of 32km and they finished second on the day and won the tour by 13 minutes ahead of the second place in the open men category.

Gert and Damion will be participating in the Vets Tour on September 24 in Swadini; they’re hoping to come back with another win.
