Heritage month celebrated in many ways

Heritage Day recognises and celebrates the cultural wealth of our nation

Mpumalanga Culture, Sport and Recreation MEC, Thandi Shongwe, led the celebration of the Heritage month at the eMalahleni municipality grounds.

The ceremony was held on Tuesday, September 21. MEC Shongwe pointed out the importance of the national symbols, the national flag, the national anthem and the other national symbols.

This was said during the closing ceremony to end the celebrations, she said: “It is important that people should know the importance of our flag and that they should love and respect it as a symbol of unity. The flag must always stay clean and should be hosted the correct way. Heritage Day recognises and celebrates the cultural wealth of our nation. South Africans celebrate the day by remembering the cultural heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of South Africa. Even though we have different cultures, we are united as a nation and we need to be proud of that. Living heritage is the foundation of all communities and an essential source of identity and continuity.”

MEC Shongwe also indicated that our national flag was hosted for the first time at the Union Buildings on April 27 in 1994.

She said the flag should give one hope and love as a symbol of unity.

She said living heritage plays an important role in promoting cultural diversity, social cohesion, reconciliation, peace and economic development.

Executive Mayor Cllr Linah Malatjie said in celebrating the heritage month with the residents of eMalahleni and joined by the security cluster, SAPS, law enforcement and the traffic officers is very important.

She also explained the symbols in the municipality emblem.

She also indicated the importance of knowing the national symbols and respecting them.

“Knowing your origins will enable one to know which direction to take going forward. It is important to know what role heritage plays in promoting peace. Cultural diversity, social cohesion, reconciliation, peace and economic development are part of our heritage,” said the mayor.
